I Would Like to Be Baptized
Believer's baptism is a significant step of obedience in the life of the new Christian and is packed with spiritual significance. It is a sanctifying means of grace (which means that helps us grow in spiritual maturity) and is the first step of obedience for a new Christian. For this reason, great care is taken by CrossRoad Church to insure that all candidates for immersion have a proper understanding of the Gospel , a scriptural understanding of baptism, and a firm grasp of the significance of the event.
Baptism is the believer's act of obedience to the command and example of Jesus Christ. It is an act of worship rich with spiritual symbolism. When a believer is baptized, he or she publicly identifies with Jesus Christ and His church and communicates to the world around them that they have been redeemed by Jesus Christ. Through baptism, the new believer announces to the world that they now participate in the resurrection life of Christ.
CrossRoad Church practices baptism by immersion for a number of reasons. The first reason is that the word translated “baptism” in the English New Testament literally means immersion. Jesus literally said, “T herefore go and make disciples of all nations, immersing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you ” (Matthew 28.19-20 a ).
The second reason we practice believer's immersion in water is because of the message it conveys. When a person becomes a follower of Christ by faith they are not sprinkled with the Holy Spirit – they are immersed into the life of Christ. Biblically and theologically, baptism by immersion is the method that best corresponds to the teaching of the New Testament. Paul wrote in G alatians 3:26-27, “You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.”
More important than how we baptize at CrossRoad Church is the question of whom we baptize. Baptism is a step of obedience and act of faith reserved for believers only . There is no scriptural warrant to baptize unbelievers (whether infants, children, or adults). If you seek to join CrossRoad Church, but have not been baptized as a believer (after your conversion), believer's baptism will be required prior to your being received into membership.
Should I be Baptized? That depends on whether or not you desire to live in obedience to the teaching of Scripture! At CrossRoad church we believe that obedience to the commands of Scripture is imperative and necessary for a disciple who wants to live for the glory of God. Jesus himself said, “If you love me you will obey my commandments” (John 14:15). Scripture clearly teaches that all believers should be baptized. Jesus himself set this standard by being baptized at the start of his ministry and subsequently commanded that new believers be baptized after placing their faith in Christ (Matthew 28.18-20). It is the first step of obedience for the new Christian.
Think about it: if you claim to be a Christian, but knowingly refuse to follow through on the very first command of Christian obedience, does your Christian testimony really have any credibility? After all, it was Jesus that said, “ Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven. But whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in heaven” (Matthew 10.32-33). While refusing baptism may not be the same as disowning Jesus Christ, it is definitely a long way from acknowledging Him. Should you be baptized? If you're a Christian – of course you should!
